If you have been interested in living in Mexico, there is no doubt this small town has come up in personal research or quick conversation. Sayulita has grown exponentially within the past few years and is now home to many digital nomads and ex-pats around the world.
I had the chance myself to call this paradise home for 5 months and through personal experience and packing my bags one too many times I will give you 3 tips of mine to help expedite the process of finding a decent place in Sayulita, Mexico.
1. Airbnb will rob you
Unless you have the means to pay $1,400 + for a studio or one-bedroom, I would avoid Airbnb at all costs. You can very much still find a studio or one bedroom ranging from $600-$900 USD. Be advised, you will be paying less for the quality of local places. Airbnb, as we all know, is known for updated and remodeled homes.
**Unless you're willing to risk reaching out directly to the owners via the app to bargain a lower price in person for cash in hand (if Airbnb catches you doing this, they will ban you). It may work out in your favor.
2. Book a hostel for a week and start talkin'
I am a strict believer in being uncomfortable and using local resources. The residents are extremely welcoming and many are willing to help you. Booking a cheap hostel, maybe Selina for a week or so, will not only help you meet some people in your same position but will give you the time to start talking to people in town that may have heard of a private room or apartment that needs a long-term tenant!
3. Facebook Groups will be your best friend.
I was quite lost moving to Sayulita when I first got there. I was lucky enough to meet some great people who really helped direct me to the best accommodation outlets. Below are a few Facebook groups to join where you can post and see postings about accommodations in the area you most desire.
- Sayulita People
- Digital Nomads Sayulita
- Renta Sayulita. Casas, Departamentos y Habitaciones
Here you will be able to speak directly with apartment managers or owners to find your best accommodations. Go see them in person, if you are able, go check the surrounding area and the apartments themselves. Photos can be very deceiving.
In Conclusion...
I wasted a lot of time and money during my time in Sayulita. No regrets, but I am more than grateful for the experience so I can save all of you, readers, valuable time and money to enjoy Sayulita to the fullest! Use these resources and you are guaranteed to find your dream place in Sayulita, Mexico!
